The Evaluation of Disinfection Method for Blood Culture

Abstract
The authors compared the efficiency of disinfection methods for blood sampling among the arbitrary divided disinfection steps. The disinfection methods were divided into the following 4 steps and samples are collected after each step: 1st step, samples attaind ¢¥:)efore disinfection; 2nd step, sample attained after alcohol disinfection only; 3rd step, samples attained at 20 sec. after iodine and alcohol disinfection ; 4th step, samples attained at 1 min. after iodine and alcohol disinfection. We compared the methods by the rate of the growth of normal flora of the skin among the samples attained from different step of disinfection as the index of efficiency of disinfection. 2 of 41 cases(4.9%) showed bacterial growth in only alcohol disinfection method and also 2 of 41 cases (4.9%) showed bacterial growth in 20 sec. after iodine and alcohol disinfection method. Therefore these two methods showed as inadequate disinfection methods. There were no cases of bacterial growth in samples attained at 1 min. after iodine and alcohol disinfection. It seems that it is important to allow the iodine to remain on the skin for at least 1 min. before collecting blood sample.
The identificaion of the staphylococci isolated from normal skin of patients were as f0 lows: S. epidermidis, 27(67.5%); S. hominis l . 6 (15%) ; S. aureus, 1(2.5%) ; S. hemolyticus, 1(2.5%) ; S. capitis, 1(2.5%) ; S.simulans, 1(2.5%) ; S.sciuri, 1(2.5%) ; and unclassifiable specimen, 2 (5%).
